To build a truly supportive world, we need to understand both how the transgender community fits within LGBTQ+ culture and where its unique journey begins.
The "LGB" (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual) spectrum deals with who you love . The "T" (Transgender) deals with who you are . A trans woman who loves men may identify as straight, not gay. A trans man who loves women may identify as straight. This nuance often confuses outsiders and, historically, even some within the LGBTQ community. For decades, transgender individuals were frequently denied access to gay bars or lesbian feminist spaces because their presence was seen as "confusing" or, in the case of trans women, as "men invading women’s spaces."
: Within the community, certain characteristics—such as passing as cisgender or fitting traditional beauty standards—can grant "social currency," while those who are more visibly gender-nonconforming may face higher risks of exclusion. Challenges Faced by Transgenders in India - Unacademy
(a self-identified transvestite and gay liberation activist) and Sylvia Rivera (a Latina transgender activist) were not just attendees at Stonewall; they were warriors. In the decades following Stonewall, mainstream gay organizations often tried to distance themselves from drag queens and trans women, viewing them as "too radical" or "bad for public image." Rivera famously crashed a gay rights rally in 1973, shouting, "You all tell me, ‘Go and hide in your closet. Just go and hide!’ ... I have been beaten. I have had my nose broken. I have been thrown in jail. I lost my job. I lost my apartment for gay liberation."
And if you are transgender, I ask you: Extend grace. Remember that many cisgender queer people fought for the right to be gender nonconforming long before we had language for "trans." The butch lesbian who feels threatened by transmasculinity is not your enemy. She is your cousin. The gay man who doesn’t "get" non-binary pronouns is not a bigot. He is a survivor of a different war.
