Directed by Angelina Jolie and shot by the legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins ( 1917, Blade Runner 2049 ), Unbroken is a visual masterpiece. Deakins’ use of natural light, the terrifying wide shots of sharks circling a tiny raft, and the stark, oppressive geometry of the POW camps are integral to the storytelling. The film’s score by Alexandre Desplat builds a haunting, emotional resonance that makes Zamperini’s final act of forgiveness so powerful.
