The warden of this prison is Vice-President Meiko Shiraki, a towering, sadomasochistic woman whose primary method of control is corporeal punishment. Yet Hiramoto subverts the panoptic model: the boys constantly seek to be seen by the women (e.g., Kiyoshi’s obsession with Chiyo), while the women are secretly driven by voyeuristic and repressed desires.
