It borrows heavily from the spaghetti westerns of Sergio Leone (specifically The Good, the Bad and the Ugly ) and classic Chinatown noir. The character of the "Spirit of the West" is a direct nod to the "Man with No Name." This makes Rango one of the few animated films that appeals just as strongly to adults as it does to children, thanks to its existential themes and cinematic references.
