Birdwhistell (1918–1994) trained under Margaret Mead and Gregory Bateson. While Mead studied cross-cultural gesture, Birdwhistell went further: he proposed that body motion could be analyzed with the same structural rigor as spoken language. He famously stated, “There are no universal gestures.” A nod in Bulgaria might mean “no,” not “yes.” A smile can signal fear, not friendliness.
