Twelve mysterious spacecraft appear at locations across the globe. Louise Banks (Amy Adams), recruited by the U.S. military, joins physicist Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) and Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) at one such site. As Louise struggles to understand Heptapod, she begins to experience time in a non-linear fashion, which challenges her perception of reality.
