Even at the birth of the movement, the "gay" part of the coalition often tried to distance itself from the "trans" part, fearing that gender nonconformity was "too radical" for public acceptance. Despite this, the die was cast. For the next three decades, trans people found shelter in gay bars, political organizations, and lesbian feminist collectives, even when those spaces weren't always comfortable.
