It painted the seafloor in textures: feathered silt, the cartography of currents, and, beyond the trench's lip, a darkness that seemed to curve inward. But then, as the unit pivoted, the 4K feed revealed something else: a geometric incision in the basalt, a perfect rectangular opening, edges beveled and scarred as if by tools older than recorded history.
